International Women's Day has its roots in the women's workers' movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time, the issues were women's suffrage, equality in society and the workplace, and discrimination. Triggered by the 1909 strike of 20,000 seamstresses in New York, German women's rights activist Clara Zetkin initiated the first International Women's Day in March 1911. More than a million women in Germany, Austria-Hungary, Denmark, Switzerland and the USA took to the streets to demand that they be allowed to hold political office and vote as women. Except in Finland, women were not allowed to vote anywhere in Europe at that time.
The successes of the last decades
Much has been achieved in the last 100 years - in many countries around the world. For example, women's suffrage has existed for 90 years, the equality article in the Basic Law for 60 years and the Equal Rights Act in Germany for 50 years. Some issues are as topical today as they were then. Today, it is also about the realization of equal opportunities, equal participation of women in working life and in political decision-making processes and social resources.
This is an important day when, although women are in the foreground, all people who stand up for equal rights and fight against discrimination in any form should also be honored.
Our attitude towards diversity
At Kiefel we are committed to the Code of Conduct of the Brückner Group, which expects diversity of all people and the commitment against discrimination as a fundamental attitude. The goals of the so-called diversity management include increasing diversity in the company, achieving more internationality and promoting women in the areas of technology and leadership.
It is also worth knowing that International Women's Day is a public holiday in a total of 26 countries. In Germany, it is only so in the states of Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania:
